Jay Evans ’26 – Classical Studies/Anthropology
Excavated at Stobi, North Macedonia (Balkan Heritage Field School), Summer 2024
“On the first day, Professor Tome told us that if, upon our leaving Stobi, even one of us felt as passionately about mosaics as he did, it would be a success. I have no doubt that every student left with this excitement. I was giddy at simply mixing mortar by the end. His infatuation with the art was infectious: I left with not only a keen interest in pursuing conservation and preservation in my life, but also an appreciation for the care and time it takes to fix and make new something so ancient, and that has been a subject of care for so many people before me. Overall, I can confidently say that this was the greatest experience of my life.”
Rowan Swain ’25 – Classical Studies/Bard Conservatory
Excavated at Corinth, Greece (Lechaion Harbor and Settlement Land Project), Summer 2024
“Archaeological work at Lechaion only began recently and has yielded some enormously exciting discoveries, several of which I had the honor of bearing direct witness to during my time at the field school. A highlight of my summer was finding a Roman coin from the first century, and I also helped to identify a fragment of Attic black-figure pottery! This was my first time doing archaeological fieldwork, and I could not have imagined a more supportive environment in which to learn.”
Naira Chopra ’25 – Classical Studies
Excavated at Gabii, Italy (The Gabii Project Summer Field Program), Summer 2023
“I don't think I've ever felt more accomplished than I did when I was at Gabii. It was exhausting, demanding, and unforgiving, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything in the world. I learned so much—in fact, pretty much everything I picked up would be almost impossible to convey through a textbook. There was truly nothing more satisfying than the before and after pictures we saw of our work site at the end of the program.”
